Technology Happenings At The End of 2012

Posted on 05:54 by Unknown
The 134-year-old U.S. public phone network may be coming to an end. A third of all U.S. households are already cellphone-only.
However, cell phone use is not the only thing helping end the public phone network.  Businesses
and households are moving from traditional services to telephone service
for voice over Internet Protocol, or VoIP, services. That’s led to the current situation where a

Loss of family pet eased by remembering BbWorld 2012 in New Orleans

Posted on 12:33 by Unknown
Today I had planned to do a  post on electronic textbooks, but this morning family lost our believed dog to a stomach tumor. Jackie was a mutt we rescued from the shelter, who stole our hearts and faithfully protected my children for the last eight years. While we never really figured out what she had lived through she but we knew she did not like toys, only barked at UPS trucks, and loved to

Student Mobility Feedback for Fall 2012

Posted on 12:45 by Unknown

Shenandoah used a Google to do a short survey of students about the SU mobile app and Blackboard's (Bb) Mobile Learn app. SU builds their mobile app with Bb's Mobile Central product. SU also pays for a  university Mobile Learn license. After having the survey open for 3 months we could only get 67 students to participate. Below are the findings.

We first wanted to see if they even used the Bb

Notes from SU's visit to Blackboard, Inc on Dec. 17, 2012

Posted on 10:37 by Unknown
Shenandoah University is lucky in that we have Ken Taylor as our Learn account representative (not even knee surgery will stop him) and that the university administration lets us take an active part in all the client feedback programs Blackboard (Bb) makes available to us. Click here to read more about Bb's client programs.

Yesterday, five of us got to spend the day at the Bb's headquarters, in

Blackboard Learn's Grade History Helps Tell A Story

Posted on 07:41 by Unknown
I am just amazed how many people do not know about or use Blackboard (Bb) Learn's built in story tellers, when trying to diagnose an issue or before claiming their is a problem with Blackboard. The good thing is that most of these story telling tools are not just for system admins, so faculty can (and should) like at them when they are having a problem.

A Bb Learn story teller that I use daily

Consider Research In This Area

Posted on 05:42 by Unknown
Why do consider researching space, robotics, gravity control, and exotic propulsion? One reason might be because businesses like Blackboard are hosting their client parties (Bb, 2011) at a location where attendees can spin and launch themselves off the 108th floor of the Stratosphere Tower, which by the way stands approximately 1,149 feet into the Vegas skyline. Another reason might be the

12 Blackboard Days of Christmas- 2012

Posted on 07:51 by Unknown
"The Twelve Days of Christmas" is an English Christmas carol that counts off a series of grand gifts given on each the days from Christmas to  Epiphany.  Last night after listening to the 12 Dog of Christmas with my son, we decided to add a Blackboard version to the list of variations to the song.  The lyrics are below with a little video that explains more about each day.

On the first day of

It’s that time of the year again when everyone plays pretend

Posted on 13:21 by Unknown

It's that time of the year when organizations and schools ask for donations, reminding you that it would be tax deductible, while pretending you are valuable to them beyond the money. They why haven't I heard from them the reset of the year? It’s the time of the year when people pretend to care,
the time when they give good wishes to each other, give away
presents to each other and do good

Entertainment Teaching to Gamification

Posted on 15:30 by Unknown
Several years ago I had my class observed by a senior faculty member and looked forward to her feedback because she was the only other female technology instructor at the community college.

I was disappointed to discuss her review of my teaching because she stated that I had an "Entertainment Teaching" style. She further stated that this was due to my interest in game theory and extreme concern
